Latest Updates from Our Project:

Happy New Year! And Updates About Add-Ons
over 1 year ago – Thu, Jan 09, 2025 at 07:11:54 AM

Happy New Year to Ars Magica fans from all of us at Atlas Games! Here are some updates.

Add-On Shipments

Numerous add-on shipments have gone to folks. In some cases these are POD book sent directly from the printer. For others, we have shipped from our warehouse in Proctor. I pushed through shipping notifications yesterday from Backerkit, which may have given you a message about something that you in fact received a week or two ago. But if it tells you you should have received something and you didn't, let us know so we can fix it!

We are in the process of sending another batch of add-ons from Proctor. These included Saga Journals that were manufactured in the US and sent to us, and which we are sending along to various backers, including ones in Canada and Australia, and some where a backer was getting both one or more Saga Journals and one or more of my hand-cast medallions.

For all of the print-on-demand items, I have to stay cognizant of the tax and customs issues. We can print in the UK and ship to the EU as long as a shipment is under 150 euros in value (the IOSS limit); but shipments over that are a problem because our POD vendor doesn't offer DDP shipping. So larger EU shipments need to be sent from the USA, where we can choose a carrier and method that pays VAT/duty at the border and bills it back to us. Similarly, for shipments to Canada we need to send them from the USA so that we can ensure that the recipient doesn't get handed a tax and service fee bill.

With 5,000 backers and dozens of add-ons, as well as dozens of destination countries, this is all quite a lot. The campaign promised delivery of things when the Definitive Edition itself is available next summer, but we are continuing efforts to deliver whatever we can sooner. Given uncertainties about international trade with the incoming US administration, we want maximum flexibility on Definitive Edition fulfillment when the big book itself is all done.

Medallions and Antiquing

I've made and sent quite a few of the Ordo Hermae and Bonisagus medallions and keychains.

In the comments, Colin Jones asked about methods for antiquing a medallion. Ones I've sent people have varied from a bright silver freshly cast look to the well weathered. If you don't do anything, zinc will oxidize over time to some shade of gray to white. (Zinc oxide is, after all, a staple for white pigmentation.) If you want to accelerate and customize the process, there are a few approaches. One is to leave it in a cup of vinegar overnight. Another is just to put it outside in the elements for a few days of rain or snow.

After you get a level of antique dullness that appeals, polish the high spots to make them shinier again. I like using a very fine grit sanding sponge or sandpaper. It doesn't take much abrasion to remove the film of oxidation and reveal the shiny metal underneath. Heck, you could just use a scouring sponge in your kitchen. Steel wool, wire brush, or even an old toothbrush can also touch it up. The one I keep in my pocket with my car keys tends to stay brighter on the high spots just from handling. If someone wanted to polish it to a bright silver and keep it that way, it would require some kind of clear coat that would prevent contact with air/oxygen.

You could also paint your medallion, using any traditional gaming minis/models techniques -- say, painting it gold, applying a dark wash, then dry-brushing the highlights and sealing everything with a clear topcoat. I've just been trying the natural/chemical processes, but enamel/paint offers some intriguing colorful possibilities. More authentic than using a paint wash is to just rub it with dirt, grime, ash, whatever. Maybe a little vegetable or mineral oil. After smearing it all over, clean it up just by wiping (rag, paper towel, etc.), and leave the grime that gets into all the fine recesses.

Have fun! It would be neat to see what people do with them, if anyone wants to share pictures on the Atlas Games forums.

Recycled Dice

We now have a mold for the recycled Ars Magica dice. Here's what it looks like:

We've tried it out in our benchtop molder with recycled polypropylene. These are the initial results.

We need to experiment now with inking techniques to make the numbers clearly visible. Having some actual rough molded dice in hand, we are now thinking about redesigning the faces for better legibility. We'll keep you posted as our research & development continues!

Chapter 7, plus Essays, Add-ons, and Newly Digitized Books
over 1 year ago – Fri, Dec 06, 2024 at 11:18:29 AM

Download Chapter 7 Preview PDF!

The advanced preview PDF of chapter seven is done! This newest draft layout is distributed via Digital Downloads page in BackerKit's pledge manager, along with all the previous chapters and other digital goods you may already have acquired.

Bibliographic Essay and Pre-Order Coupon

One of our stretch goals was a bibliographical essay for gamers by medieval historial David Perry. You'll find it among your downloads right now when you log in to your BackerKit account!

David's new book, co-authored with Matt Gabriele, releases next Tuesday, December 10th. If you'd like to pre-order a copy of Oathbreakers, be sure to sign up for their newsletter, Modern Medieval, and you'll get a 20% off coupon!

Starting to Ship Some Add-Ons

There's a great deal of uncertainty about international trade and shipping for the coming year. Also, a lot of add-ons from this campaign are things that already exist, or will soon, and you guys have already paid for them! Consequently, we are moving up fulfillment plans and split-shipping many orders. This is an evolving process, but just don't be surprised if some of your rewards show up on your doorstep much earlier than we'd originally promised!

As a reminder, we'll unlock addresses next summer before we ship out the Definitive Edition itself, to give people a chance to update their delivery information.

Newly Digitized: Grimoire and Calebais

For the completists among you, we've continued working to bring the last few stragglers from previous editions of the game into digital format, using our new book scanner and OCR software. There are now two more available on our web store: the Lion Rampant second edition of The Broken Covenant of Calebais; and the White Wolf sourcebook for 3rd Edition, The Wizard's Grimoire.

As a backer of our campaign, you're also entitled to the 20% off coupon below! The coupon also works on the other digital books that were made newly available in the pledge manager: Ars Magica First Edition, Calebais First Edition, Lion Rampant versions of The Stormrider and The Medieval Bestiary, and the third edition Parma Fabula storyguide screen.

Download Chapter 5 Now!

The Chapter 5 Advance Layout PDF is ready! After you fill in your survey, you'll be able to view it in your Digital Downloads page in BackerKit's pledge manager.

That also gives you immediate access to the files we've already distributed:
  • The advance manuscript text doc
  • Digital freebies
  • Advance layout PDFs of Ch 1-4 (for eligible tiers)

Future advance layout PDFs will be distributed this way as well, as our password-protected folder proved to be immediately insecure, unfortunately.

Pledge Management & Surveys Update

If your payment in full was successful, you should have already received a link to your pledge management survey. It allows you to select additional add-ons, calculates shipping and applicable VAT, and collects payment information for any charges. We are locking pledges and collecting funds ASAP, so that backers will have immediate access to all of the digital bundles that are also ready for download.

If your payment had an error, you should have received a message from Backerkit. After the error is fixed you'll get a survey.

If you chose to pay over time
, your survey will be sent after your last payment is received. You can choose at any time to pay your remaining balance in full.

A reminder about Storyguide Screens: The screen is included inside every Definitive Edition slipcase set! It's also available as an add-on for people who want a separate copy (to combine a physical screen with a digital version of the book, for example).

If you have any problems or questions, reach out to us at [email protected].

Pledge Manager Smoke Test
over 1 year ago – Thu, Nov 21, 2024 at 06:17:57 AM

Hi! This is John Nephew, president of Atlas Games, and fan of Ars Magica since 1988. I've been working hard since the campaign ended to get the first of your rewards to you, and I have a lot of information to share today! Thank you for your patience.

Pledge Manager Smoke Test

Our pledge manager is now set up. Today we will send out a "smoke test" -- this sends surveys to 5% of each pledge level, and gives us a chance to find and fix problems before we unleash the entire Infernal Realm upon ourselves.

If you receive a survey, I hope you can fill it out right away! There are so many variables in fulfillment of this campaign, and we can't wait to get backers the rewards that are already available.

Survey Incentive! "A Small Note, A Large Affair"

A week ago, I found an unpublished introductory scenario written by Jeff Tidball in 1997 for 4th Edition. It was designed to play in under two hours, so it could easily run in a convention game slot to introduce the game to newcomers. We've set it up as a free download for everyone who backed our campaign at any pledge level. You must fill out your survey to receive it!

New Add-Ons!

You'll see numerous new add-ons available in your survey, from a newly digitized version of Ars Magica 1st Edition to a House Bonisagus medallion, hand cast by me in your choice of four alloys. Newly digitized books will soon be available on our website as well, but as campaign add-ons you'll see a 20% discount.

Shipping and Payment

Going by credit card billing address, we have backers in 61 different countries! The pledge manager now has shipping tables for them ALL, covering scenarios from "one set of dice" through "full Library of Durenmar plus additional add-ons". I can add more countries and territories if necessary -- drop us a line at [email protected] if you need your rewards sent somewhere not already configured.

The pledge manager will calculate shipping and, where applicable, taxes, which we will charge to the credit card you provide. You'll see a summary of your pledge including funds already collected; if your original payment didn't go through, you can pay everything together through the pledge manager.

Digital Reward Fulfillment

After you fill in your survey, you'll be able to view your Digital Downloads page. It gives you immediate access to the files we've already distributed -- the advance manuscript text, digital freebies, and for eligible tiers the advance PDFs of Definitive Edition chapters 1 through 4. Future advance layout PDFs will be distributed this way as well, our password-protected folder proved to be immediately insecure, unfortunately.

Digital Downloads page access to your digital bundles and add-ons requires that your survey be complete, locked and paid.

The final digital version of Definitive Edition will be available this spring, when the book layout is finished and going to press. You'll find the core rulebook on the Digital Downloads page then, and we'll send everyone notification.

Softcovers and Add-Ons

For many orders, we now expect to split shipment. When Definitive Edition arrives late next summer, we don't know what the international trade and tariff landscape will be like. We may need to have international orders of the book fulfilled from outside the United States. Items made in USA (such as dice and medallions) will need to ship from here in any case; and print-on-demand items may drop-ship directly from the manufacturer.

This means that some of your rewards may come much sooner than originally expected. I'm evaluating a print-on-demand book vendor that would let us print and drop-ship all of the softcover books for the Library of Durenmar and add-on backers, directly to you, very possibly before the end of this year. The source files are already set up for production; I'm just waiting for samples to evaluate.

We'll need to lock addresses for anything that ships soon. We will unlock addresses next year, before fulfilling Definitive Edition, so that anyone who moves between now and then will have a chance to confirm or update their place of delivery.

Thank you again, everyone, for your incredible a support of Ars Magica in this campaign and across the decades.

-John
